My latest foray into the supernatural took me to Showman's Rest in Forest Park Il. Woodlawn Cemetery As legend has it, a trainload of circus performers were stranded on the tracks in Hammond Indian in the middle of the night when their engine malfunctioned. A second train did not see them on the tracks and collided at top speed and killed 51-64 people as they slept. The number is unsure because most on board were new and had not registered with the company yet, and the ensuing fire left the bodies unrecognizable.
The grave markers left a sad memory of that incident, some were marked with Male or Female, some with Baldy or some other physical trait the nameless victim had. Then there were the many marked with Unknown that made the feel of the place sad.
The overall feel was anxious, as though there were something to be done but there was no way to convey that message. I turned on my EVP and it quickly returned a message, COP was the only word as I stood next to a marker with Unknown Male written on it. Maybe he was a police officer, we may never know.
The feeling I got was one of despair, depression, and hopelessness. Graveyards are usually places of love and remembrance, but not at Showman's Rest the restless spirits are bound here with no one to remember them.
